This course aims to present a concise, readable account of some basic mathematical aspects of state space methods. A basic background in calculus and matrix theory and also modern engineering tools such as Matlab and Mathematica are also provided for analysis and simulations of control systems. The main topics to be covered include mathematical modeling of dynamical systems in state space, matrix solutions of linear systems, various structural canonical forms such as Jordan canonical form and companion canonical form obtained by state transformation, linear control systems, controllability, observability, linear feedback, pole assignment, state observers, the notion of stability and algebraic criteria for linear systems. The Lyapunov theory, design of control systems via the second method of Lyapunov, optimal and adaptive control systems should also be introduced in the course.
